(Unit 6) Topic 4: Everyday Etiquette for Educators

1 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

Timeliness

Topic 4 Page 4

In any job, it is important to be on time. Nothing is more unprofessional to an employer than someone that is perpetually late. Bosses want to know that they can count on their staff members to be there on time, ready to work. Caregivers should arrive to the workplace 5-10 minutes before their shift begins to get their personal affairs in order i.e. using the restroom, putting personal belongings away, etc.
Being Prepared
Another element of being a professional educator is being ready for the day. Teachers need to be organized in order to be effective. Planning lessons and activities well in advance is always a good idea. Be sure that you are setting aside time weekly, if not daily to review curriculum and design your lessons.

It is always important for teachers to be knowledgeable about what they are teaching. Take the time to study whatever it is that your students are learning about. Even if it is something you already know, a refresher on the topic can be useful. Remember that you are the one that your students look to for information. You owe it to them to be as familiar with a topic as possible.
Either the night before or the morning of, gather all of the supplies that you will need for the day. Having to stop in the middle of a lesson to go and find something is disruptive, and you will no doubt lose the attention of your students. Be sure that you have everything you need easily available before you begin teaching.
