(Unit 6) Topic 4: Everyday Etiquette for Educators

1 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

General Etiquette for Professionals

Topic 4 Page 3

Educators are often held to a higher standard of conduct than other professions. The reason for this is that parents and guardians entrust them with one of the most important parts of their lives- their children. This means that they expect you to show the qualities and attributes that comprise a quality childcare provider.
Professionalism isn’t an intrinsic skill that each professional person is born with. Instead, it is a set of competencies or skills that are expected of a professional person. Honing in those skills and competencies take time and training. Professionalism also requires that a person dress, act, and train appropriately in order to meet a certain set of standards set by their field.
Attire
Part of being a teacher is looking like one. In order to gain the respect of students, their families, and coworkers, educators must present themselves in a way that projects professionalism.
Here are some suggestions for looking your best in the classroom:
  • Your clothes should be free of holes, tears, or stains.
  • Clothing should not be tight, revealing or low-cut
  • Skirts and dresses should be knee length or longer
  • Wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes
  • Makeup should be tasteful and not distracting
  • Personal hygiene should be maintained
  • Know and follow the specific dress regulations of your center
