Ball Toss Challenge
Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing activities to young children.

Age Group:
  • Toddler
  • Preschool
  • School-Age
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with infants.
Objectives:
  • Child will practice counting and numeracy .
CDA Competency Standard:
II.5.1a
Activities encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery.
  1. Activities involve developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences
Materials:
  • One tennis ball per child
Procedure:
  • During outdoor play time or PE, give children the balls and let them have some free play time with them.
  • After a few moments, challenge children to toss the balls up in the air as many times as they can in an allotted time. Allow them the freedom to choose how high to toss. Help toddlers toss the balls and count their tosses.
  • Next week, challenge them to beat their record!
Assessment:
  • Observe and record how the children count over a span of time. You should see growth and improvement over several weeks.
Extension:
  • Challenge children to use different types of balls and compare their results.
  • Chart the number of tosses each child gets each week.
  • Instead of tossing balls in the air, toss them back and forth between friends, or between hands.
