(Unit 6) Topic 2: Student-Led Learning

2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

21st Century Skills

Topic 2 Page 14

According to Tony Wagner, the first Education Fellow at the Technology & Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard, the key to effective 21st century learning is in the combination of "passion, play, and purpose." In many ways, this seems to contradict the current educational trends and ideas with the ever-hovering Common Core Standards dominating the American educational landscape. Fortunately, the concept of combining passion, play, and purpose actually can support these ideas and more.

For children, play is essential to learning but also provides an outlet and drives their abilities. Parents and caregivers can attest to the lightbulb moment of a child learning through play. Whether it is a mobile infant that is finally able to roll a ball across the floor, or a first grader who creates a city out of blocks. What drives these children to persevere even when facing huge obstacles, is the passion that they have for play. In turn this passion for play becomes passion for learning. The student-led classroom can take inspiration from these very ordinary achievements because children find their purpose in play and passion and find what motivates and drives their thirst for knowledge. That intrinsic motivation is the magic key that has the potential to unlock a love for learning even in the most unexpected situations.
