Sponge Puzzles
Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing activities to young children.

Age Group: ​ 
  • Toddler
  • Mobile Infant (with supervision)
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with preschool children.​
Objectives:
  • Student will practice small motor skills by pinching and grabbing
  • Student will engage in cooperative play with peers

  • a) Encourages children’s social interactions

Materials:  
  • Cellulose sponges in different colors
  • Scissors
  • Permanent marker
  • Baskets for each puzzle

Procedure: 
  • Trace puzzle piece shapes onto sponges and cut along the lines. You can alter the puzzle pieces by shape, size, or intricacy to meet the needs of your program.
  • Place the puzzles in a basket and make them available to children to use and play with when they are interested. Encourage children to play in pairs or small groups.
  • Pay close attention to how the children use the puzzles and be prepared to make them more or less challenging based upon your observations.
Assessment:  
  • Observe and record the child’s fine motor skills. Were they able to grasp the puzzle pieces and put them together?
  • Observe and record the child’s social interactions. Did they work together willingly with peers or did they prefer to complete the activity independently.
Extension:
  • Introduce different types of puzzles to complement the sponge puzzles. Rotate puzzles so that children remain interested in the puzzles.
