Parade Float Project

Age Group:
  • Preschool
  • Kindergarten
Objectives:
  • Children will explore a topic related to their community with help from adults
CDA Competency Standard
II.7.4a
Candidate promotes individual expression and creativity.

A) Encourages creative self-expression in children’s activities
Materials:
  • Shoe boxes
  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Books and other materials about your state or other local information
Procedure:
  • Guide students in researching a topic related to their local community or state. You should read books that support these topics to your class and provide them in the book or reading area.
  • After students find something of interest to them, encourage them to draw pictures, print out computer photos, and cut out shapes to glue onto a parade float made from a shoe box. Allow children creativity and independent choice in their design and planning for their parade floats.
  • Attach a string to the front of each box and give students a chance to pull them along in a line just like a real parade procession!
Assessment:
Assess student expression and representation of their topic and choice, keeping in mind that the focus is on their own choice of expression.
