(Unit 6) Topic 5: Preventing Teacher Burnout

1 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

What is Burnout?

Topic 5 Page 2

Teaching is a profession filled with joy, inspiration and passion, but sometimes teachers put so much into their position that they experience what is often referred to as “burnout.” Burnout is when a person becomes so overworked and stressed that they experience a mental or physical breakdown. This often occurs in teachers, child care professionals and other career fields where expectations to perform are unreasonably high. Likewise it can occur in individuals who are extremely driven to succeed and often overcompensate. Teacher burnout is a real thing, claiming the wellbeing of countless teachers each and every year. While experiencing workplace stress is difficult to avoid, allowing it to consume you is sometimes difficult and hard to manage. This training will consider the causes of teacher burnout and present some unique tools for combating it. Also included in this training are real-world suggestions and practical applications for directors to support their staff to help them avoid burnout.

Most people become teachers because of a strong passion and a desire to spark a love of learning in their students. This passion is often contagious and efficacious, but does not change the amount of stress that comes from being an educator. In fact, according to The National Education Association, teachers will experience stress at least two to four times per day and that stress can often lead to major health problems.  This is just one of the reasons to learn about teacher burnout and all that can be done to avoid it.
