(Unit 6) Topic 10: Managing Your Time

1 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Classroom Evacuation
This can be due to illness, behavior, or mechanical malfunction (ex: pipe burst). Evacuations are typically sudden and very rushed. Practice the routine with your class so that you avoid losing time over panic or confusion.

Injury
Your center should have a plan in place for injuries and illnesses already. Follow those guidelines in your classroom but have a plan in place for how your students should respond. Should your assistant teacher coax children away from the area with story time or a song? Should you keep several First Aid kits in your classroom instead of one up high on the shelf far from where activities happen?

Visitors
Sometimes a visitor in the classroom can cause quite the stir. Children become accustomed to the adults that they are used to. When a new adult comes into the environment children will become excited and curious which causes the normal routine to be thrown far off track. Prepare children by creating another routine and set of expectations.

Broken Toy or Equipment
Does a broken toy or piece of equipment cause quite a commotion? You may not even know if it does but having a plan in place to address that before it becomes a challenging situation is vital to managing your time. Create a routine where each morning someone does a quick check through all of the equipment to make sure that it is in proper working order. Of course if something is broken and it causes a safety hazard it needs to be eliminated immediately. If it is something minor, like a train set with a train that won’t roll then you can choose how to handle things best.
