(Unit 6) Topic 10: Managing Your Time

1 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

Communicate to Save Time

Topic 10 Page 11

How to communicate:

Be clear
Don’t dance around the objective of the conversation. You are communicating to express a point that is helping you to get something done. This is not a conversation about the weather. Tell the person what you need or do not need from them.

Be polite
If someone hears you say something with a questionable tone or accusatory statement they will not be able to work past it. They may drag their feet, refuse to help, or worse. There’s no reason not to be kind.

Communicate in person
Tone is crucial as noted above and very difficult to decipher unless you can hear their voice. If you can help it, don’t communicate via email, text, or especially social media. An in person conversation is always preferred.

Converse
The point of communicating is for there to be an opportunity for a back and forth conversation. Talk with the person, not at them.

Have a goal
If you are talking just to talk then you are certainly wasting more time. You should be talking with your goal in mind. There are other times to socialize and chit chat but this should not be one of them. This will only serve to take up more time and that is certainly not helpful.

Cut the fluff
Socializing is important to build a foundation of support with your colleagues but have you ever considered how much time you waste by doing that? Before you start your next conversation about the newest episode of your favorite show consider whether or not you are working against yourself. Socialize on your break time but not when you should be using your time wisely.
