Mission or Vision Statement

Topic 7 Page 7

If your center does not have a mission or vision statement, it is an excellent idea to start there. The purpose of a mission or vision statement is to provide a clear path to an organization’s goals and plans for the immediate future. This statement should guide decision making for all staff members and also inform the community about your organization.

When developing (or redeveloping) a mission statement it is great to get the entire staff involved. This gesture in itself is a team-building experience that can promote transparency and trust in your organization. These are important elements in building a team atmosphere with staff members.
Building a Mission Statement as a Team
Building a mission statement is a lot like building a structure. You will have more success with more help. Here are the steps to build a mission statement:
  1. Identify what is working well and capitalize on that. As a team, list the positives of your center and choose the most important ones. How can those be summed up into short phrases or words?
  2. Identify what needs to be improved and turn that into action. With your staff develop goals to make those improvements while adhering to the administration needs of your center.
  3. Develop phrases that are professional and well received. Work together to edit and rephrase, as needed, until your mission statement is polished and well written.
  4. Use your mission statement on marketing and branding materials. Put it on business cards and brochures. Post it somewhere that families can see it and hang a copy on the staff bulletin board.
Elevator Speeches
A mission statement should be short, sweet and to the point. Often these are called “elevator speeches” because the intent is to be able to give the mission statement in the amount of time it would take to ride an elevator and inform a new acquaintance about your organization.

Writing shorter mission statements simplifies things and cuts the “fluff” in goal setting and information giving.
